Vocabulary: Fall #6

accede - take on duties or office; to agree or express agreement; submit or yield to another's wish or opinion
Anyone would accede if people stopped listening.

brandish - the act of waving; verb move or swing back and forth; exhibit aggressivelyYou can brandish no weapons here.

comprise - form or compose; include or contain; have as a component; be composed of
We would comprise the team of experts, obviously.

deft - skillful in physical movements; especially of the hands
To be deft is very sought after.



destitute - poor enough to need help from others; completely wanting or lacking
The southern districts were destitute.

explicit - precisely and clearly expressed or readily observable; leaving nothing to implication
Explicit language is often bleeped out on TV.

extirpate - surgically remove (an organ); pull up by or as if by the roots; destroy completely, as if down to the roots
The doctor will extirpate the tumor.


inopportune - not opportune
Inopportune measures were taken instead, due to the changes.

ironic - characterized by often poignant difference or incongruity between what is expected and what actually is;humorously sarcastic or mocking
Ironic was the feeling of returning home after storming off years ago yelling "I'll never come back!".

musty - stale and unclean smelling; covered with or smelling of mold
There was a musty smell about the shed.

officious - intrusive in a meddling or offensive manner
Their officious actions prompted our departure.

ominous - presaging ill fortune; threatening or foreshadowing evil or tragic developments
I listened to the ominous sounds of the wind.

pinnacle - raise on or as if on a pinnacle; surmount with a pinnacle
The iPhone was the pinnacle of technology.

premeditated - characterized by deliberate purpose and some degree of planning
Premeditated actions are most often the best.

rampant - unrestrained and violent
Wild animals can go rampant and cause destruction.

solace - comfort in disappointment or misery; the act of consoling; giving relief in affliction; the comfort you feel when consoled in times of disappointment
I sat in solace, unable to move.

stately - of size and dignity suggestive of a statue; refined or imposing in manner or appearanceimpressive in appearance
Our house was stately.

supple - make pliant and flexible
I felt the supple winds.

suppress -  to put down by force or authority; put out of one's consciousness; keep under control; keep in check; control and refrain from showing; of emotions; come down on or keep down by unjust use of one's authority
It can be hard to suppress sounds.

venal - 
capable of being corrupted
Unfortunately, the congress was venal, the big guys came in and paid them off.

adroit - quick or skillful or adept in action or thought; skillful (or showing skill) in adapting means to ends
The swift movements were adroit.

amicable - characterized by friendship and good will
Their amicable theme was joyful.

averse - strongly opposed
I became averse to all the changes made.

belligerent - engaged in war; characteristic of an enemy or one eager to fight
Some people can be so belligerent, uncontrollable too.

benevolent - generous in providing aid to others; intending or showing kindness; generous in assistance to the poor; showing or motivated by sympathy and understanding and generosity
The benevolent man gave us our stolen book.

cursory - hasty and without attention to detail; not thorough
"What a cursory job, terrible," I said.

duplicity - acting in bad faith; deception by pretending to entertain one set of intentions while acting under the influence of another; a fraudulent or duplicitous representation
Duplicity is not always best.

extol - praise, glorify, or honor
The guys felt the need to extol my actions.

feasible - capable of being done with means at hand and circumstances as they are
The everything is feasible, just figure out how.

grimace - a contorted facial expression; verb contort the face to indicate a certain mental or emotional state
When I grimace, I make a twisted face.

holocaust - an act of great destruction and loss of life
The scene was devastating, like a  holocaust.

impervious - not admitting of passage or capable of being affected
His force field was impervious, nobody was hitting him.

impetus - the act of applying force suddenly; a force that moves something along
Impetus was used to finish stacking the wood correctly.

jeopardy - a source of danger; a possibility of incurring loss or misfortune
The dog was in jeopardy of falling.

meticulous - marked by extreme care in treatment of details;marked by precise accordance with details
Meticulous is equal to painstaking.


nostalgia - longing for something past
Nostalgia is very powerful.

quintessence - the most typical example or representative of a type; the purest and most concentrated essence of something
Quintessence is a narrow point.

retrogress - go back to bad behavior; get worse or fall back to a previous condition
To retrogress can be bad for people with bad habits.

scrutinize - examine carefully for accuracy with the intent of verification; to look at critically or searchingly, or in minute detail
"People like to scrutinize, I'll be more lenient with you", he reassured me.

tepid - feeling or showing little interest or enthusiasm; moderately warm
My tepid attitude should show I don't care about the subject.
