Vocabulary: Fall #5

adroit - quick or skillful or adept in action or thought; skillful (or showing skill) in adapting means to ends
He was adroit in his field, nothing confused him.


amicable - characterized by friendship and good will
Their amicable friendship was the envoy of all.


averse - strongly opposed
I was averse to her "better plan".


belligerent - engaged in war; characteristic of an enemy or one eager to fight
The belligerent drunk stumbled across the room, almost tripping twice.



benevolent - generous in providing aid to others; intending or showing kindness; generous in assistance to the poor; showing or motivated by sympathy and understanding and generosity
The Sheriff's Benevolent Posse provided funding for equipment for their mounted unit.


cursory - hasty and without attention to detail; not thorough
His cursory job was noticeably unfinished.


duplicity - acting in bad faith; deception by pretending to entertain one set of intentions while acting under the influence of another; a fraudulent or duplicitous representation
Her duplicity upset their initial expectations.


extol - praise, glorify, or honor
They were to extol the soldier at a ceremony later that day.


feasible - capable of being done with means at hand and circumstances as they are
The feat was feasible so he jumped and, though nearly losing balance, made it.


grimace - a contorted facial expression; verb contort the face to indicate a certain mental or emotional state
I made a grimace as he described the scene.


holocaust - an act of great destruction and loss of life
We must never forget the Holocaust, lest we forget.


impervious - not admitting of passage or capable of being affected
The door was impervious, we would never get in by force.


impetus - the act of applying force suddenly; a force that moves something along
With impetus, we opened the jammed door.


jeopardy - a source of danger; a possibility of incurring loss or misfortune
One of my all time favorite game shows is Jeopardy. (The dog was in jeopardy of falling.)


meticulous - marked by extreme care in treatment of details;marked by precise accordance with details
Meticulous work was put into fixing the old clock.


nostalgia - longing for something past

I have nostalgia for things like old games I've played.


quintessence - the most typical example or representative of a type; the purest and most concentrated essence of something
The quintessence of fishing is to be relaxed and at ease out on the water.


retrogress - go back to bad behavior; get worse or fall back to a previous condition
Unfortunately, she retrogressed back into her old drug habits.


scrutinize - examine carefully for accuracy with the intent of verification; to look at critically or searchingly, or in minute detail
"People like to scrutinize, I'll be more lenient with you", he reassured me.


tepid - feeling or showing little interest or enthusiasm; moderately warm
My tepid attitude should show I don't care about the subject.
